Dorset Seaweeds
What we do...
Our aim is to provide high quality concentrates that work for a variety of applications. For centuries, seaweed has been used as a soil improver, and now with increased research in this field, it has been proven that its benefits go much further than just improving the soil. Not only does seaweed contain useful components such as amino acids, vitamins, cytokinins, auxins and abscisic acid it is also rich in many macro and micro nutrients that plants need, that are often lacking in common fertilizers found on the market. Dorset Seaweeds manually harvest seaweed from a section of the famous Jurassic coastline in mid Dorset. With permission from The Crown Estate these seaweeds are sustainably cut, washed and processed to retain the maximum benefits held within the seaweed. Dorset Seaweeds also utilises up to 10% of beach cast material always leaving enough behind as habitat and food sources for invertebrates, birds and mammals.
Each weed is cut by hand at the appropriate time of year to allow rapid regrowth and cutting zones are rotated to ensure enough time is allowed for the seaweeds to regenerate. The seaweed is then processed and put into fermentation barrels. The whole process takes less than 24 hours, ensuring the seaweed is as fresh as it can be. The seaweed will ferment for up to 3 months and is then cold pressed before being filtered prior to bottling. The aqueous extraction and cold pressed method employed by Dorset Seaweeds is a time-consuming process, but this helps to protect nutrients and hormones within the concentrate when compared to other extraction methods.
